Crisis at Athletic: Uriarte backs Valverde before Mestalla | OneFootball

Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte has publicly backed Ernesto Valverde amid a dire run of form, stressing faith in the coach before the trip to Mestalla. According to Superdeporte, he underlined that both the club and the dressing room support Valverde.

Uriarte described Valverde as the right person to steer the team out of a difficult league position, pointing to his experience and energy. He spoke at San Mamés during a mid-season sporting review.

He accepted the league record is poor, with 25 points, three above the relegation zone, after taking only 16 from the last 59 available, and two from the last 18. The short-term goal is to secure the 17 points needed to reach 42, which in theory ensures safety.

Uriarte said the club must face the reality, acknowledge that recovery will not be easy, and react. He highlighted work, unity, backing and trust as the essentials. He asked for calm, recognised fan anger and defended their right to protest, while calling for support.

He maintained confidence in the squad and staff, describing the group as competitive and capable of turning results around. He was highly critical of the very poor Supercopa showing after a heavy semi-final defeat by Barcelona, but viewed the Champions League campaign as positive given very tough circumstances.
