Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his critics with a sensational display in Portugal’s 5-0 triumph over Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old made history against tournament minnows as he became the first player to score at six different World Cups.
Ronaldo broke the deadlock in the seventh minute by slotting home a pinpoint cross from Joao Cancelo.
The experienced centre-forward struck again before half-time, finishing expertly into the far corner with Bruno Fernandes the provider.
Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao also earned their names on the scoresheet,as the Euro 2016 winners sealed an emphatic 5-0 success.
Portugal came into the tournament as one of the favourites, but suffered an early setback against DR Congo who held them to a frustrating 1-1 draw.
Ronaldo’s place in the team was called into question after his disappointing performance against the African side last week.
He cut a frustrated figure in their opening World Cup fixture, spending most of the game completely isolated in the box.
The former Real Madrid star squandered two scoring opportunities, had 25 touches and registered just three shots during his 90 minutes on the pitch.
But Roberto Martinez supported Ronaldo in his pre-match press conference, insisting the forward is in the team on merit.
He repaid the faith of his manager by delivering a masterclass against Uzbekistan.
Ronaldo registered seven total shots, won 100 percent of his aerial duels and made three defensive contributions.
