Crystal Palace’s bid to overturn their demotion from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League has failed.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed the ruling on Monday, according to the BBC.

As a result, Nottingham Forest will compete in next season’s Europa League, while Palace will take their place in the Conference League.

This outcome comes shortly after Palace defeated Liverpool to win the Community Shield.

CAS deliver a hammer blow to Palace

Eberechi Eze’s strike secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final at Wembley Stadium.

UEFA later ruled that Eagle Football’s 43 percent stake in Palace, through chairman John Textor, conflicted with its majority ownership of French club Lyon.

Both clubs had qualified for the Europa League, creating a breach of competition ownership rules.

The governing body determined that this breach meant Palace could not compete in the same European tournament as Lyon.

Consequently, Forest moved up to the Europa League, while Palace were dropped into the Conference League.

Palace will now aim to make a deep run in the competition and hope to become the third Premier League club to win it since its introduction.

West Ham and Chelsea have both lifted the trophy and Palace will fancy their chances of adding their name to the roll of honour.

The news is a massive boost to Forest, who now have the chance to play in UEFA’s second-tier competition.
