Crystal Palace seek a third consecutive victory as they welcome an out-of-sorts Newcastle side to South London on Sunday.
The Eagles currently fly high after a dominant 3–0 win over Fiorentina in Europe. Consequently, Oliver Glasner’s men enter this fixture with significant momentum. However, Palace have won just once in their last ten home league games. They also struggle following midweek European matches, winning only once in nine attempts.
Newcastle return to action after a three-week break following their demoralising derby defeat to Sunderland. Eddie Howe’s side have lost six of their last nine Premier League fixtures. Moreover, they remain joint-bottom for points collected during that dismal run. The Magpies are looking for a historic league double over Palace today. A victory would also move Howe level with Sir Bobby Robson’s club win record.
Oliver Glasner manages several late fitness tests following Thursday’s European exertions. Evann Guessand and Jean-Philippe Mateta both suffered minor knee knocks against Fiorentina. Consequently, Jørgen Strand Larsen and Christantus Uche may return to provide fresh legs. However, Eddie Nketiah is definitely ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Eddie Howe confirmed mixed injury news after the long domestic hiatus. Bruno Guimarães will not feature today as he recovers from mumps. Furthermore, Fabian Schär is out for a month following a minor operation. Notably, Lewis Miley has returned to full training and could feature. Sandro Tonali is also in a good place after playing during the international break.
Palace have turned Selhurst Park into a defensive fortress with five consecutive clean sheets. They currently occupy 14th place but sit closer to the top six than the drop zone. Notably, the Eagles have conceded 43% of their goals from non-penalty set-pieces. This represents the highest ratio of any side in the division.
Newcastle have struggled for defensive stability, losing six of their last nine matches. Only three sides have earned fewer points than the Magpies during this period. Significantly, Anthony Gordon has scored in three straight league games. Newcastle also remain a potent set-piece threat with 14 goals this term.
Crystal Palace Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Canvot, Richards, Lacroix; Munoz, Wharton, Hughes, Mitchell; Sarr, Pino; Mateta
Newcastle United Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes; Gordon
