Cuca will be on the Vila Belmiro touchline on Thursday as Santos face Remo in the ninth round of the Brasileirão. The meeting revives his links with the Pará club.

According to Globo.com, he took charge of Remo in 2001 in Série B early in his managerial career, but the spell was brief. He was dismissed mid competition with the team 19th overall and near the relegation places.

Their connection began earlier, in 1994, when Cuca played for Remo. That was the club’s last top-flight campaign before a 32-year absence, and with him on the pitch they thrashed Cruzeiro 5-1 at the Mineirão.

There were heavy defeats too, including a 6-0 loss to Atlético-MG, and Remo went down that year. Cuca still helped a 2-0 win over Náutico, scoring the second, which proved Remo’s final goal of that Brasileiro.

This season, Remo sounded him out again. With no agreement reached with Guto Ferreira, the coach who won promotion for the Brasileirão 2026, the board offered the job to the Paraná-born manager. He asked for time to decide, but the directors moved quickly and chose Osório instead.
