According to Globo.com, Cuiabano and Thiago Mendes are playfully arguing over who scored Vasco’s opener in the 2-1 win against Grêmio. Referee Davi de Oliveira Lacerda’s match report credited the goal to Thiago Mendes after a review.
On the pitch it appeared to be Cuiabano’s strike. The move began with his shot, which glanced off Thiago Mendes before crossing the line. It was first awarded to the left-back, then reassigned to the midfielder following the officials’ check.
Vasco joined the fun by posting a video of the squad rewatching the clip. Cuiabano insisted it was his, saying the ball merely brushed Thiago’s shirt and urging his team-mate not to try to claim it.
Thiago Mendes replied that the ball did touch him and that a touch is enough, before thanking Cuiabano for the assist with a laugh.
The club’s account also shared a photo of the pair on the pitch, wondering if they were seeking a consensus. Both players commented beneath, each stating the goal was theirs.
Vasco’s form under Renato Gaúcho has been strong, with 10 points from 12. They have beaten Palmeiras, Fluminense and Grêmio, and drawn with Cruzeiro.
The victory moved Vasco up to ninth in the Brasileiro on 11 points. They return after the international break to face Coritiba on 1 April at 20:30, at Couto Pereira.
