Liverpool is thriving this season, not just in the Premier League but also as the top team in their Champions League group. In a recent episode of the Daily Red Podcast, Dave Hendrick delves into Liverpool’s achievements and assesses their Premier League opponents, including Aston Villa, underlining Liverpool’s stellar form and strategic advantages.
Hendrick opens with a bold reminder: “Liverpool are the only team to win all four games” in the Champions League group stage. The accomplishment feels particularly impressive given that Liverpool faced one of the most challenging draws, a point he emphasised by calling it “The Nightmare draw.” Yet, Liverpool has emerged victorious, showing resilience that Hendrick believes is worth celebrating. “We shouldn’t get carried away… but it does give us a very clear path to a top-eight finish and an automatic berth in the last 16,” he added, underscoring the club’s significant positioning for the knockout rounds.
Liverpool’s attack has been a key part of their success, and as Hendrick points out, they are among the highest scorers in the Champions League. Noting that only three teams — Barcelona, Dortmund, and Bayern Munich — have scored more, he commented on Liverpool’s potency: “We’re among the best attacks in the competition.” Liverpool’s defensive strength has also been pivotal, with just one goal conceded, a record they share with Aston Villa, whom Hendrick compares throughout the episode.
Hendrick scrutinises Villa’s performance this season, acknowledging their “pretty good start,” which has placed them sixth in the Premier League. Villa’s record, however, has come largely against struggling teams, as Hendrick highlighted: “Four of their five wins are against teams… who are potential relegation contenders.” He pointed out that Villa’s victories over lower-ranked teams, including Leicester, Everton, and Wolves, may inflate their status in the league.
Villa’s defensive record tells a similar story. While they share a solid defensive record in the Champions League, Villa’s Premier League form hasn’t been as consistent, conceding nine more goals than Liverpool. “We’re scoring a lot more than them… and we’re conceding a lot less,” Hendrick observed. He sees Villa’s defensive weaknesses as an area Liverpool could exploit in their upcoming clash.
Looking ahead to the Liverpool-Villa match, Hendrick identifies the Villa players Liverpool must neutralise. John Duran, Villa’s top scorer, is noted as a consistent threat. “We’ve seen him score all different types of goals,” Hendrick warns. Alongside Duran, Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers bring physicality and skill that Liverpool’s defence must prepare for. “These are big, powerful, skillful individuals… we’ll have to be very wary of them,” Hendrick advises.

Liverpool’s own players are in fine form, and Hendrick is confident that they will prove more than capable of dealing with Villa’s main threats. He specifically highlights Liverpool’s stronger goal difference and better defensive stability as factors that should lead to victory. Hendrick summed up Liverpool’s tactical advantage by stating, “If we stop these players, the rest can’t beat us… we’re playing better, and we know we’re a better team.”
Hendrick concludes with optimism about Liverpool’s current trajectory, both in the Champions League and the Premier League. With a favourable run of Champions League games against weaker opponents, Hendrick asserts, “There’s no reason for us to not think we can win those four games.” He suggests that topping the Champions League group with an unbeaten record would provide Liverpool with a psychological edge going into the last 16.
Returning to Liverpool’s domestic ambitions, Hendrick sees the remainder of the season as full of opportunities, noting, “For all the talk of how difficult things were going to get for us… things really start to open up.” Hendrick’s confidence is clear: with the current squad under the guidance of Arne Slot, Liverpool is positioned to challenge for the league title and progress deep into Europe.
