Dan Burn: I was buzzing for Malick Thiaw - but I haven't been giving him set-piece coaching!

We put in a really good performance at Everton at the weekend and getting that first away win of the season was something we’d been wanting to do for some time – although it certainly hadn’t been for the want of trying.
On Saturday, I felt we controlled the game better with the ball than we had done in previous away games. In some matches – particularly against Brentford – we maybe got sucked into what the opponents wanted, whereas at the Hill Dickinson Stadium we played our own game, played some really good football and were clinical enough to kill the game off.
That said, we had to deal with Everton’s direct style of play and we were solid in the way we did that, which is always a good foundation to build from. I enjoyed going back to centre-half, having played left-back for a while, and I was buzzing for my defensive partner Malick Thiaw as well because he’d been waiting a while to get a goal, never mind two!
He certainly hasn’t been getting any coaching off me when it comes to scoring from set-pieces, but he had been consistently getting into some good positions without getting the rewards. They were both excellent headers which played a big part in us getting the three points.
It’s the first time we’ve had back-to-back Premier League wins this season and if we want to be where we want to be this season we’re going to have to put a lot more of them together.
This week, with two home games, is a big opportunity to do that. These fixtures against Tottenham and Burnley are ones we don’t take lightly, but we do back ourselves against anyone at home.
And we’ve already beaten Spurs here in the Carabao Cup, which we’ll take confidence from. It tends to be that we do well against Tottenham at home, so we’ll be out to make sure that continues tonight.
But this will be a totally different match to that cup fixture just over a month ago and we’re going to have to be ready to go. But under the lights at St. James’, I always fancy our chances.
Our fans are always there for us, home and away, and it was good to give them something to shout about down at Everton and hopefully we can do that again this evening.
Dan Burn.
