Dan Neil faces a significant decision as his Sunderland contract expires this summer. According to Sunderland Echo, the former Black Cats captain is reportedly set for talks with Rangers, with Premier League newcomers Coventry City also interested.

Neil effectively drew a line under his time at his boyhood club in January, agreeing a loan to Ipswich Town for the rest of the season. He helped the Tractor Boys clinch promotion to the Premier League.

The midfielder made 17 appearances as Kieran McKenna’s side finished runners-up in the Championship. He has now secured a second successive promotion to the Premier League. A permanent switch to Portman Road is not expected, with Neil’s Sunderland deal running down.

In a farewell message, the Academy of Light graduate thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to have helped take Sunderland back to the Premier League, and called captaining the club a boyhood dream. He added that, as a lifelong fan, he is excited for what comes next.

Coventry are believed to be monitoring him as they prepare for the top flight after winning the Championship. Meanwhile, reports suggest Rangers could open talks over a move to Ibrox, a switch that might appeal given the prospect of European competition and a tilt at domestic silverware against Celtic and Hearts.
