Dani Carvajal’s Real Madrid future is set to hinge on his fitness across the next three months, with his contract up in the summer. The right-back has endured fresh setbacks since helping Spain lift Euro 2024.

According to The Athletic, the 33-year-old is keen to stay and does not anticipate major obstacles to a one-year extension, though Madrid have yet to open talks. The club are described as undecided for now and view any call as a mutual decision shaped by his contribution and dressing-room influence.

Carvajal has featured in just 10 matches this season after a muscle tear, then a knee problem that ruled him out for November and December. He missed much of last season with a cruciate ligament injury, returning in time for the Club World Cup, and new manager Alvaro Arbeloa has eased him back, with no starts since early January despite being fit.

For the first time, he has been open to finishing his career in the Middle East or Major League Soccer. It was said he seriously considered Qatar, where former team-mate and brother-in-law Joselu Mato plays for Al-Gharafa, and he posed with the club’s shirt during a visit.

It appears he will have the rest of the campaign to show his body can handle elite demands. After two relatively clear years, his fitness issues have resurfaced. His immediate aim is to reach the World Cup with Spain in peak condition.
