Dani Vivián’s season is over after suffering a sprain of the external lateral ligament in his right ankle.

The Athletic defender is ruled out for Sunday’s game against Celta at San Mamés. He is unlikely to feature at the Bernabéu, where Athletic end the campaign. The club gave no timeframe and said his recovery will be monitored.

Vivián was named in Luis de la Fuente’s provisional 55-player World Cup list alongside team-mates Simón, Nico and Laporte.

However, he has not been a regular in recent Spain squads. Given that, his chances of going to the World Cup are relatively slim after this injury.

All signs point to yesterday’s outing at Cornellà being his final appearance of the season.
