Danilo has been sidelined by Botafogo and will miss training sessions and matches while his future is decided.
According to Globo.com, he will not travel with the squad to Paraguay for Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana tie against Independiente Petrolero.
He told head coach Franclim Carvalho on Saturday he did not wish to face Corinthians, was listed then cut hours before kick-off at Nilton Santos, officially for personal reasons, a call that displeased staff and directors.
He had three fixtures left before joining the national team for the World Cup, one in the Brasileirão at São Paulo’s Morumbis and two in the Sudamericana, including Caracas. All call-ups were due to miss the final league round, when Botafogo visit Bahia.
He has made 12 Brasileirão appearances, and one more would prevent him playing for another club in the competition. Keeping the domestic market open for the mid-year window was a factor.
Danilo was called up on Monday, with a meeting planned for Tuesday to decide next steps before he reports for the World Cup. There were concerns over injury risk, given his workload and an ankle issue.
He prioritises a return to Europe with a title-challenging club, which his camp see as possible but tied to World Cup form. In Brazil, Palmeiras are preferred and president Leila Pereira is the leading advocate, while Flamengo are also being considered for a style viewed as favourable.
