Rangers are eyeing a January move for Josh Windass

Rangers are preparing a move to bring Josh Windass back to the club from Wrexham in the January transfer window.

According to Give Me Sport, the Red Dragons are keen to keep the 31-year-old amid interest from the Scottish giants.

The forward previously played at Ibrox from 2016 to 2018, making over 50 appearances in that time.

Windass also played under Rangers boss Danny Rohl during his time in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, where he proved a key part of his side in the Championship.

He joined Phil Parkinson’s side in the summer following his exit from Hillsborough, in which he departed by terminating his contract after financial issues led to his wages not being paid on time on multiple occasions.

Rangers have made an enquiry to sign Windass from Wrexham on loan in the upcoming January transfer window.

However, the Championship side are understood to be reluctant to let the 31-year-old go midway through the campaign.

Windass has made 19 appearances from the opening 22 league games so far this season, contributing six goals and three assists.

But Rohl is believed to be keen to reunite with the player just six months on from their respective departures from Sheffield Wednesday.

It has been a difficult season so far in the Premiership for Rangers, and it’s been claimed that the German coach is seeking reinforcements to his attacking options, with his sights set on Windass.

Wrexham are in their first year at this level of English football since 1982, and are currently 15th in the Championship table, seven points adrift of the play-off places as the halfway mark approaches.

Next up for the Welsh outfit is a home clash against Sheffield United on 26 December in a 5.30pm kick-off, as Parkinson’s side seek to end their five-game winless run.

Wrexham can’t sanction Josh Windass loan move

Windass is proving an important part of Parkinson’s plans, so it would be quite strange to sanction a loan exit in January.

He’s their second top scorer behind Kieffer Moore, and he’s got the kind of attacking quality that has made Wrexham so competitive this season.

Perhaps if Rangers make a strong enough offer to sign him on a permanent basis then a deal may make sense, but a loan agreement has no real upside for the Red Dragons.

It would be very surprising if this went through on these terms, and it’s damning for Rangers that they had the opportunity to sign him as a free agent in the summer, and it’s only now that they want him.
