Despite the historic Anfield triumph, Manchester United were under pressure heading into Saturday’s all-important Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Seagulls have dominated the Red Devils in recent seasons, winning six out of their last seven encounters, and naturally, they were in a buoyant mood ahead of the game at Old Trafford.
And despite referee Anthony Taylor’s best attempts at helping the visiting side, the hosts emerged 4-2 winners and have now notched three wins on the bounce.
The 20-time English league champions led 3-0 within 60 minutes in a dominant display, before former United star Danny Welbeck pulled one back from a brilliant free-kick.
The South Coast side scored again in added time to put the cat among the pigeons, but Bryan Mbeumo settled the deal late on.
The home side deserved the win, and after the game, Welbeck was asked about what he felt about his former club’s display.
The England international has a great recent record against the three-time Champions League winners, scoring in each of the last three seasons.
But he admitted that Ruben Amorim’s current side is the best iteration of United he has faced in quite a while. He lavished praise on the team’s togetherness and tactical structure out on the pitch.
“It is the best [Man Utd] side we have faced in a while. They were really organised and structure, they always have incredible players and today they really punished our mistakes.”
High praise indeed, something Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler agreed with. Following the game, the German manager even claimed that the club spent their money wisely during the summer.
“Much more intense, much more compact, defending forward and more quality. The money was well invested.”
The summer signings have certainly done the trick for United and long may it continue.
