Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck has signed a new one-year contract extension, according to The Athletic.

The 35-year-old continues to defy expectations late in his career and has become an integral part of the Seagulls’ attack since his arrival.

Welbeck’s previous deal on the South Coast was due to expire this summer, but he has triggered a 12-month extension clause which will keep him at the Amex Stadium until June 2027.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United forward has been in scintillating form, scoring in each of his last two appearances – including the decisive winner against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

As a result, Welbeck has now reached double figures for Premier League goals for the second successive season, joining Glenn Murray as the only Brighton player to achieve that feat.

Since joining the Seagulls as a free agent in 2020, Welbeck has scored 48 goals in 191 appearances. What began as a calculated gamble has blossomed into an Albion success story.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, speculation has surfaced regarding a surprise England recall for the veteran striker. Welbeck will be eager to strengthen his case by finishing the 2025-26 campaign strongly.

Welbeck will have the chance to celebrate his new contract in style when he lines up against his former club and current league leaders Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

A positive result against the Gunners would provide further momentum for Brighton, who are targeting a top-half finish after a challenging winter run.

Fabian Hurzeler’s men endured a difficult six-match winless run between January 19 and February 14, but have since bounced back with consecutive victories.
