Darío Benedetto made a surprise return to Boca, not as a new signing but as a Barcelona de Ecuador player training there. According to LaNumer12.com.ar, Boca were finalising plans to face Gimnasia de Chivilcoy in the Copa Argentina.

This was not the start of a third spell at Boca. Wearing Barcelona colours, the former Xeneize striker prepared to face Argentinos Juniors in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores play-off.

During their stay in Argentina, Barcelona trained at Boca’s Pedro Pompilio Complex, known as Casa Amarilla. The session formed part of their build-up to a tie that will decide their continental future.

Supporters in Guayaquil are excited after the Berazategui-born forward scored on his league debut against Técnico Universitario. Barcelona must win in La Paternal after losing the first leg in Guayaquil by a single goal.

Benedetto is aiming to rediscover his best level after years of setbacks and several months without a club. His last team was Newell’s Old Boys, a three-month stint that ended with his contract rescinded in October 2025.

Argentinos Juniors host Barcelona on Wednesday 25 February at 21:30 at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona. The match is scheduled to be shown on Fox Sports.
