Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Sunderland and Manchester City figure Simon Wilson as sporting director, a newly created role following relegation from the Championship.
Wilson arrives after leaving Stockport County at the end of last season, having helped drive the club's rise from the National League to League One.
He joined Stockport as director of football then became chief executive, overseeing significant progress at Edgeley Park. The club reached the League One play-off final last month, losing to Bolton Wanderers.
Wilson has also worked with Manchester City, Sunderland, Southampton and Leicester City, plus Sparta Prague and Ajax, bringing broad experience across England and Europe.
In outlining his approach, Wilson described Wednesday as a historic club with a unique identity and passionate support, and said the team and culture should reflect that energy. He emphasised patience, consistency and alignment, adding that the aim is sustainable success rather than quick fixes.
Chief executive David Bruce called the appointment an important moment, praising Wilson's strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and operational leadership. He said the move underlines a commitment to modernising the club and strengthening its football structure for long-term success.
