Liverpool’s search for a new attacking spearhead has led them towards one of the most exciting young talents in European football, with the club stepping up efforts to sign RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande.
The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the most coveted players on the continent following a stunning breakthrough campaign in Germany, and Liverpool are now understood to be leading the race for his signature despite fierce competition from across Europe.
According to reports first revealed by The Athletic, Liverpool have made contact with Leipzig as they intensify their interest in the Ivory Coast international. While no agreement is close, the Merseyside club are believed to be in the strongest position with the player should negotiations progress further.

There is little mystery as to why Liverpool are pushing hard for Diomande. Arne Slot’s side are entering a new era following the departure of Mohamed Salah, whose exit has left a sizeable void in both leadership and attacking output.
Finding a successor capable of transforming Liverpool’s forward line was always likely to be one of the club’s primary objectives this summer. Diomande’s explosive blend of pace, directness and technical quality has made him a standout candidate.
Leipzig, however, are in no mood to encourage discussions. The Bundesliga club have consistently maintained that Diomande is not for sale and would require an offer exceeding €130million before reconsidering their position.
That valuation presents a significant challenge. Liverpool have already invested heavily in recent transfer windows and continue to have other areas of the squad requiring attention. Whether they are prepared to approach Leipzig’s demands remains one of the key questions of the summer.
Diomande only arrived at Leipzig from Leganes in 2025 and remains under contract until 2030. Crucially for Leipzig, there is no release clause in his deal, leaving them firmly in control of any negotiations.
Interest in Diomande extends well beyond Liverpool.
Paris Saint-Germain continue to monitor the situation closely, while Manchester City are among several elite clubs tracking his development. However, Liverpool’s pursuit currently appears the most advanced.
Leipzig’s confidence stems not only from the strength of the player’s contract but also from the extraordinary season he has just produced. Across all competitions, Diomande delivered 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances, helping Leipzig secure qualification for the Champions League.
Those numbers only tell part of the story. His performances have consistently demonstrated a maturity beyond his years, combining end product with a fearless attacking approach that has unsettled some of Europe’s best defenders.
The player himself has remained calm amid the growing speculation.
Speaking to reporters, including The Athletic, last month, Diomande said: “Imagine people say you go to Chelsea or Real Madrid (as examples of big clubs) to do this job … you’re going to be happy and motivated to do more.
“I don’t think about it too much because my focus is on the pitch, my job is playing football, that takes care of everything, but it gives me a lot of motivation to see people talking about me.”
What makes Diomande particularly attractive to Liverpool is the versatility of his game.
Comfortable on either foot, he is capable of attacking defenders from both flanks and can beat opponents through skill, acceleration or sheer physical power. His unpredictability makes him exceptionally difficult to contain.
Analysis from German football correspondent Seb Stafford-Bloor highlighted another crucial strength.
Diomande was measured as the fifth-fastest player in the Bundesliga last season, but his most devastating attribute may be his acceleration. Few players can move through the gears as quickly from a standing start, allowing him to create separation in even the tightest situations.
For a Liverpool side that has often lacked pace and penetration in wide areas, those qualities are especially appealing.
Liverpool’s recruitment model has traditionally focused on identifying young players with elite potential before they reach their peak value. Diomande fits that profile perfectly.
At just 19 years old, he already possesses the physical tools, mentality and production levels associated with established stars. Yet there remains considerable room for further development.
The challenge is the financial commitment required. Reports suggest a deal could eventually cost around £85million, a figure that would represent a major investment for a player with only one full season at the highest level.
Nevertheless, Liverpool appear convinced that Diomande could become a cornerstone of their next generation.
With Leipzig determined to hold firm and rival clubs waiting in the wings, the pursuit is unlikely to be resolved quickly. However, as first reported by The Athletic, Liverpool have made their move and now find themselves at the front of one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer races.
