He returned to the Etihad amid the belief that he would be first choice, only for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival to alter the landscape. Trafford admitted in February that being No 2 “wasn’t what I expected” and that he “tried to guard against the situation happening”. For a goalkeeper of 23, ambition and impatience are often signs of health.

Leeds United Need Clarity in Goalkeeper Position

Leeds have reason to move decisively. Karl Darlow, who finished last season as the club’s No 1, has left on a free transfer to Manchester United. Lucas Perri remains at the club after a difficult first year in England, while Alex Cairns is still on the books. James Trafford is young, proven, hungry and clearly desperate to play. That last bit is vital. You want a goalkeeper who sees Elland Road as a place to own, not merely somewhere to pass through.

If this comes off, it feels massive. We have all seen how unsettled the position has looked at times over the past couple of years, and after Darlow’s exit there is a real need for authority. Trafford brings that. He has already shown he can anchor a promotion-winning side, and his profile suggests there is even more to come. The fact he is “leaning towards a switch to Elland Road” says plenty about where Leeds are as a club right now.

Supporters will also love the idea that Leeds can offer a genuine pathway to prominence. Regular football matters, and if Trafford arrives as first choice, he gets the stage, the pressure and the backing of a crowd that values commitment above all else. This would not feel like a stopgap. It would feel like Leeds signing the goalkeeper they want for the next few years. In a summer of important decisions, that could be the one that sets the tone for everything else.
