Liverpool are entering a decisive period regarding the future of Ibrahima Konate, with fresh indications that Real Madrid have cooled their interest. With the French defender’s contract set to expire next summer, his situation is becoming increasingly important for Arne Slot and the club’s long term planning.
Konate’s deal runs out at the end of the 2025 to 2026 season and from January he can legally discuss a pre contract move with overseas clubs. That scenario would leave Liverpool facing the possibility of losing a starting centre back for no fee, something the recruitment team are keen to avoid.
Despite long running links with Real Madrid, reports from David Ornstein for The Athletic now indicate that the Spanish giants have decided against pursuing the France international. This development removes one of the most widely discussed suitors, yet it also increases pressure on Liverpool to either secure a renewal or prepare for life without one of their key defensive figures.

Konate has endured an uneven campaign as Liverpool attempt to regain stability in Slot’s second season in charge. While the 26 year old has started all 12 of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures, performances across the back line have come under scrutiny.
Liverpool’s slump to 12th place has been shaped by a difficult run of results, with nine defeats in 12 matches across all competitions. That sequence has left Slot searching for solutions to a defence that has conceded far too many goals in quick succession.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konate has made 150 appearances for Liverpool and scored six goals. His blend of recovery pace, strength and proactive defending has often made him a mainstay when fit, but the contractual clock is ticking.
Liverpool must now decide whether to accelerate talks over a renewed deal or prepare for significant change in their central defensive options. With Real Madrid stepping aside, the focus shifts fully onto internal negotiations, squad planning and Slot’s vision as the champions attempt to steady their season.
