Liverpool are edging closer to securing their next marquee summer signing, with an outline agreement now in place with Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike. As reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, the transfer is not yet finalised but is expected to be completed in the coming days.
The deal, should all add-ons be met, could become a record-breaking sale for Frankfurt — surpassing the €95 million (£82.3m) they received from Paris Saint-Germain for Randal Kolo Muani in 2023.
“Work is still needed to formally get the deal done and that is expected in the next day or so,” Ornstein reported.
Liverpool’s intention to strengthen their attacking options this summer has been clear — and necessary. The devastating loss of Diogo Jota earlier this month cast a dark shadow over pre-season plans, but the club has since pressed on with their recruitment, adding Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Hugo Ekitike now appears to be next. The 23-year-old French forward scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists last season, earning a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. His rise has been impressive since joining Frankfurt permanently for €17.5 million following an initial loan from PSG in January 2024.
“Liverpool were advancing in talks for Ekitike, with personal terms not expected to be an issue,” Ornstein added.
Liverpool’s pursuit of a striker has been thorough. Ornstein also revealed that the Reds enquired about Alexander Isak and were open to a deal in the region of £120 million. Meanwhile, Newcastle had previously made a €75 million offer for Ekitike, which was rejected, before switching focus to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
Change may not be limited to incomings. The report confirmed that Luis Diaz has communicated a desire to leave, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona both interested. Liverpool are also open to offers for Darwin Nunez, which could further shift the dynamics of their frontline.

Ekitike’s move would add pace, technical flair and an eye for goal — all traits that could reshape Liverpool’s attack.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the reported move for Hugo Ekitike feels both ambitious and forward-thinking. The tragic loss of Diogo Jota left a gaping hole emotionally and tactically — and while no player can truly replace him, a player of Ekitike’s profile suggests the club is aiming high.
At 23, he still has plenty of development ahead, yet his output last season — 22 goals and 12 assists — is elite by Bundesliga standards. Add to that the fact he was named in the Team of the Season, and it’s easy to see why Liverpool are keen. What stands out most is his versatility and intelligence in movement — hallmarks of a forward who could adapt well to Anfield’s demands.
Concerns do remain, of course. Ekitike has yet to play for France’s senior team and had a difficult spell at PSG, where he struggled to break into the side. That said, Frankfurt’s nurturing environment helped him thrive, and if Arne Slot can offer similar backing, Liverpool might just have a gem on their hands.
Fans will also be keeping a close eye on potential exits. If Diaz and Nunez do leave, Ekitike’s arrival will feel more like a necessary reshuffle than a luxury addition. Either way, the next week could define Liverpool’s attacking future — and possibly its title hopes.
