David impressed as a makeshift centre-forward in Vasco’s 2-1 comeback against Palmeiras at São Januário, registering his first assist of the season. He says the mood has lifted since Renato Gaúcho replaced the dismissed Fernando Diniz.

Playing with his back to goal, he teed up Thiago Mendes for the equaliser as Vasco sit 15th in the Campeonato Brasileiro with four points. "It is not about Diniz, but I think we already face a lot of pressure outside the pitch, and when there is the same inside, I think it weighs a bit. He, Renato, gives us the freedom to give our opinion. The mood is much lighter," he told ge.

"Renato tries to pass on what he has learned, but says 'I am not the owner of the truth, I also listen to opinions'. He jokes a lot, he was a great player and is also a great coach."

Before Renato arrived, David had started only against Nova Iguaçu and Fluminense in the Campeonato Carioca. "For sure it is a rebirth. I am getting an opportunity with Renato. Diniz has his style, I always respected it, but it was not really my style to drop deeper. Today we went long more often, I won some and kept the ball."

Vasco now aim to pull clear of the relegation zone. Renato Gaúcho’s staff are preparing for a testing meeting with Cruzeiro in the sixth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro on Sunday 15 at 20:30, at Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.
