Despite not being able to offer new deals out, Wednesday may have had their chances of retaining one player in particular made a lot easier...

Sheffield Wednesday are still stuck in limbo when it comes to their ownership situation, and the longer it drags on, the less certain the club's plans for next season are.

The likelihood is that the current Owls squad - which was relegated from the Championship two months ago - will look completely different in a few months' time when a takeover is expected to be completed, and that will ideally be sooner rather than later through David Storch's Arise Capital Partners consortium.

A number of Wednesday's current first-teamers have contracts that are expiring in the summer, and there's no guarantee that their big-hitters will want to stick around when they drop into League One for 2026-27.

However, it appears that encouragement has been given from one player in particular in regards to potentially remaining at Hillsborough for the foreseeable future - perhaps to the surprise of many.

Max Lowe could remain with Sheffield Wednesday despite League One relegation

According to Wednesday reporter Joe Crann via The Wednesday Word, one of the better players from the club's struggles in 2025-26 - Max Lowe - is receptive to remaining with the club in League One, despite his contract expiring in the coming months.

The 28-year-old - who is a former Sheffield United player having plied his trade on the other side of the Steel City between 2020 and 2024 - has been at Wednesday for two seasons now after departing Bramall Lane, and despite the club's struggles both on and off the pitch, the left-sided defender has remained a solid outlet for Henrik Pedersen.

A report from the January transfer window claimed that ex-Wednesday boss Danny Rohl enquired about taking Lowe north of the border to Rangers in the early stages of 2026, but a move never materialised, allowing the defender to see out the season at Hillsborough.

And despite the presumption that Lowe would attract Championship interest ahead of his contract expiring this summer, he has now reportedly made himself open behind the scenes to staying with his current employers for a bit longer - even if it means playing in the division below.

Max Lowe staying at Sheffield Wednesday would be a massive coup for Owls

Given how well he's performed in a struggling team this season, Max Lowe will likely been on the radar of several Championship teams for next season - and perhaps even Danny Rohl again at Rangers.

So, for the defender himself to reportedly express an interest in renewing his contract with the club in a division below is not only good news for Henrik Pedersen and Wednesday's fans, it's also good news for prospective new owner Storch.

If his takeover is completed, Storch will want to build the best squad possible for an immediate promotion challenge, irrespective of the expected 15-point deduction coming the Owls' way, and if Lowe signs up for that when the club are able to offer new deals, then that's a big early boost to their chances.

Of course, Lowe expressing his interest in staying doesn't mean he'll follow through with it, but it's a crumb of comfort for the potentially soon-to-be Sheffield Wednesday hierarchy that there's at least a willingness to talk about things to see if a deal can be done.
