Dayne St. Clair, 29 and the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, enters a defining stretch at Inter Miami as Canada’s World Cup backup, with his starting role in Miami under scrutiny.
According to interheron.com, he rejected a $1.2 million offer from Minnesota United to join stars including Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul and Germán Berterame, taking a base salary of $745,313.
In preseason he spoke of seeking the best environment to win, stressing the value of training alongside elite team-mates and testing himself daily, particularly with a World Cup ahead. He also wanted the intensity of bigger crowds and media attention, saying matchday focus from supporters mattered most.
On 28 May, Canada coach Jesse Marsch named Maxime Crépeau, 32, as starter, highlighting maturity and experience. He said the security Crépeau provides, along with his talent and intelligence, makes Canada a better team right now.
The next six months could shape how St. Clair is remembered. Can he anchor the Herons’ defence, or will he slide into a journeyman role?
