“It is TRUE: Dayot Upamecano’s future looks close to being resolved. We reported on Upamecano’s contract situation on Wednesday. We think that things will progress very quickly, perhaps we’ll have an official decision by next week.

“I spoke one-on-one with the centre-back after the match in Salzburg, and he said that things were looking good. There are just a few things they need to talk about. Bayern Munich’s view is that they have everything on the table, so there will be further talks, but the main issues are clear now.

“Upamecano’s agents need to give the green light. I think this will happen very soon. Then a new contract for the 27-year-old helps Bayern very much when it comes to squad planning, because at the moment they have Jonathan Tah, Upamecano for the future, and a comfortable situation with Kim Min-jae where he can stay or leave (and then the club will have money for a new centre-half).”

Bayern ready to grant Upamecano’s wish

According to a report from Bild, Upamecano sought a release clause in his contract that would allow him to leave at a reasonable price if Bayern loses its competitive edge.

After a long hesitation, Bayern have decided to grant his wish. They will insert a a €65m release clause that will be activated from the summer of 2027.

The official confirmation is only a matter of time now.

However, the presence of a release clause does not mean that Upamecano desires to leave Bayern. Rather, it is the opposite. The French defender wants to remain at Bayern, but the clause gives him the assurance that he has a fixed option if he wants to pursue a new challenge.

Vincent Kompany has played a big role in persuading him to agree to a new deal. The Belgian boss has convinced Upamecano that he is a big part of his plans for the coming years.

Upamecano was granted his other demands, including a salary increase to up to €20m gross per year, making him one of the club’s top earners. He will also receive a signing fee in the range of what Alphonso Davies got when he signed a new deal last year.

With his extension now largely secured, it will be interesting to see whether the club still moves for Marc Guehi, who will become a free agent next summer.
