Kevin De Bruyne didn’t mince words toward Antonio Conte and raised doubts about staying at Napoli next season in an interview with Nieuwsblad (via Sky).
“I think I played at a good level at the beginning and after returning. It was obviously difficult for me because the coach had a very different football vision from mine. I’ve never starred in my ideal role. I’ve always given my best and logged big minutes even after the injury, so it’s all good.” “As far as I’m concerned, he didn’t have to stay. I’ve learned this year that the playing style is important to me. It must be fun, and I missed that. We had discussed certain things in that respect last summer, but they didn’t come true. I still have a year left on my contract, so I’ll have to talk with the team. We were very defensive-minded. It’s not great when you score once a game while using a 5-4-1. Our top striker bagged ten goals, so the numbers aren’t great, but I think things worked out okay in terms of level and football in general.”
Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini replied to De Bruyne to Mediaset.
“Maybe it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Napoli to sign a 33-year-old player who cares more about aesthetics than results. He never conveyed joy or enthusiasm.”
