Luis de la Fuente says between 20 and 22 Spain places are set for this summer’s World Cup. That leaves four to six up for grabs in United States, Mexico and Canada, fitness permitting.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the open roles are a goalkeeper, a centre-back, an interior midfielder and a winger, with right-back also uncertain. He has used 40 players and must lodge a 55-man list before naming 26.
In goal, Unai Simón and David Raya are locks, with Álex Remiro and Joan Garcia competing for the third berth.
Left-back is settled, Marc Cucurella and Álex Grimaldo are set to travel, with Alejandro Balde next in line. On the right, Marcos Llorente leads, Pedro Porro follows, and Dani Carvajal could return if he nears his old level.
Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte have started together lately, with Dean Huijsen next if his form holds. The final spot is open, with Marc Pubill, Eric García and Cristhian Mosquera candidates.
Rodri Hernández and Martín Zubimendi will anchor midfield. Fabián Ruiz, Mikel Merino, Pedri González, Dani Olmo and Fermín López are set to join them, with Pablo Barrios favoured for the remaining spot and Pablo Fornals or Carlos Soler as cover.
Out wide, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams remain starters if the latter shakes off pubalgia, with one more winger likely between Yéremy Pino and Víctor Muñoz.
Up front, Samu Aghehowa’s injury leaves Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres and Borja Iglesias preferred, Álvaro Morata out and Gonzalo García waiting.
