Almere City’s Byron Burgering was unstoppable on Monday evening. The winger scored four times against FC Eindhoven and has now notched six goals in his last two games.

“Great evening,” Burgering smiled afterwards for ESPN’s cameras. The forward’s first goal was quite ridiculous, as he sent a looping corner all the way in from the right in the 32nd minute.

“To be honest, that corner was a close call,” he said. “We’d rehearsed a bit, and I can just see it flying in. I was stunned.”

His second strike came just six minutes later, as he latched onto an Amoah Foah-Sam flick on from a long throw on the right to slot home inside the six-yard box. For goal number three in first-half stoppages, the wideman rather sheepishly admitted there was a little bit of luck involved, despite his vicious effort still rising from a free-kick as it slammed into the Eindhoven net.

“For that second one, I had to stand at the far post. For that third, Teun Bijleveld was eager to take the free kick. He said, ‘I’ll put it short, and you shoot it in.’ But I completely mis-hit it, and it flew beautifully in.”

Seemingly, then, it was a case of everything he touched turned to gold, and his fourth finish came in the 52nd minute. Taking down a sweeping long ball on the right, the star man jinked back inside his marker, and thrashed another ferocious strike home, this time off the left post.

While Oliver de Nijs ended the day well with a fine header for 5-0 shortly after this, the evening was all about Burgering. Now, after two goals against Jong PSV last Friday (4-2 L), the winger has scored his season’s tally of six goals in two games.

Burgering continued to ESPN after the game, “We needed this. We bounced back really well today. I don’t remember anything about those first 10 or 20 minutes. I was full of adrenaline.”

With this resounding victory, Almere now sit 12th after five games, and will be hoping to turn their Keuken Kampioen form around from here.
