Villarreal fall to the English side in their third Champions League group-stage clash

Villarreal CF were beaten 0-2 by Manchester City in their third fixture of the UEFA Champions League group stage. Despite competing well, the Yellows were unable to contain the English giants, who imposed their dominance through possession and converted their superiority into goals from Haaland and Bernardo Silva in the first half. Marcelino’s men pushed to close the gap after the break, but without success. The best chance came from Oluwaseyi, who hit the post with a header from a corner.

It was a big occasion for Villarreal CF, their third Champions League encounter and their second at the Estadio de la Cerámica, against one of the best clubs in world football. This was Manchester City’s second ever visit to the Yellows’ home, the first having come 14 years ago.

Marcelino opted for a starting XI full of pace and physicality to counter Pep Guardiola’s possession-based game. Pepe, Mikautadze and Buchanan led the attack, with Thomas, Gueye and Comesaña in midfield, and a defensive line of Mouriño, Foyth, Veiga and Pedraza. In goal, Luiz Júnior returned to the starting line-up.

City immediately took control through long spells of possession, and before the first minute had passed, they missed an early chance to go ahead. Moments later, however, they found the opener. In the 16th minute, Haaland made it 0-1, showing his trademark finishing instinct by slotting home a low cross from Lewis on the right.

Villarreal tried to react to the visitors’ goal by looking for space behind the English side’s defence, but misplaced passes in transition prevented them from creating clear danger before the half-hour mark. Up to that point, the best chance for the Submarine came from Gueye, whose long-range strike narrowly missed Donnarumma’s goal.

In the 40th minute, City struck again. Bernardo Silva made it 0-2, heading home a cross from Savinho, once again from the right-hand side. The English side punished Villarreal, who had been growing into the game.

The opening stages of the second half offered few chances, with Villarreal struggling to find rhythm and continuity, while City continued to dominate possession, albeit at a slower pace than before the interval.

From the 70th minute onwards, the Yellows shifted gears in search of a goal to get back into the match. Gueye and then Nicolas Pepe both went close: the former with a powerful effort from the edge of the box, and the latter with a header from a fine Cardona cross that drifted just wide.

Those chances reignited the crowd and fuelled Villarreal’s belief as they pushed to find a goal that would bring them back into contention. They pushed higher, pressed harder and flooded the City box in the final moments.

In the 90th minute, Tani Oluwaseyi came agonisingly close to scoring Villarreal’s first, heading against the post from a corner in what was the home side’s best chance of the night.
