Real Madrid are still very much in with a chance of a domestic double this season, which in both cases would involve usurping rivals Barcelona in order to lift the trophy. However much of the talk in the Spanish capital is about a succession plan for Carlo Ancelotti’s exit rather than trophies.

Most recently it was confirmed by Bayer Leverkusen that they have an agreement to allow Xabi Alonso to leave should Los Blancos come calling, albeit at a price. It has been said that if Ancelotti does achieve a Copa del Rey and La Liga double, he could continue at the club, despite the feeling that his cycle is coming to an end at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It has been revealed by El Chiringuito that the latter is still in play for Ancelotti. One of the largest nails in Ancelotti’s proverbial coffin was Real Madrid’s 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals but they say that the club still feel that the double is possible, and should Los Blancos pip Barcelona to the Copa title in Seville, then their chances of lifting La Liga, following the mental blow to Barcelona, will increase exponentially.

Their information is that after defeat to Arsenal, Perez told Ancelotti ‘You can’t have any doubts about your management, you’re the manager with the most trophies in Real Madrid history.’ It is well-known that Perez takes an active role in decision-making, and likes to discuss the team’s progress on a regular basis with the manager.

It was noticeable after their loss to Arsenal that Ancelotti’s tone on his future did appear to change somewhat. Previously he had claimed that he had the confidence of ‘the most important person’, taken to mean Perez, whereas after their European exit, Ancelotti admitted that he ‘did not know’ what the future held, and that decisions would be made at the end of the season.
