Ruben Dias’ City story will continue until 2029 and if his current stats are anything to go by, there’s plenty of reasons to be excited.
The Portuguese defender has agreed a new contract that could take him to nine years at the Etihad Stadium.
Now 28, he arrived in September 2020 as a 23-year-old prospect and has gone on to become one of the Premier League’s leading lights.
In just under five years, he’s played 223 times for City – which means only 76 players have ever represented our great club more in 131 years of history.
Of course, all of those performances have come under Pep Guardiola’s guidance.
Despite only being here for just over half of the Catalan’s stint to date, only 12 players have turned out more for City during Guardiola’s reign than Dias.
It could hardly have started better for Dias, when he was named both the Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year award in his very first campaign.
He remains the only defender ever to have claimed both awards in the same season.
With 10 major honours, including the Club’s first ever Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs, he is of course already one of the most decorated players in our history.
Just to highlight City’s incredible domestic dominance in recent years, 2024/25 was Dias’ fifth season in England but also his first term without lifting the Premier League title at the end of it.
With 11,256 in total, Dias has completed the joint-most passes of any player in the division since his arrival.
That, of course, demonstrates just how relied upon he is in terms of starting attacks for Pep’s side.
Dias’ effect on Guardiola’s team is most apparent when you compare our numbers when he’s on the pitch and when he’s not involved.
With 107 wins in 145 games in the top-flight, Dias’ Premier League win percentage is 73.8%.
That’s the fifth best in the history of the Premier League, behind four men who have also turned out for us in Aymeric Laporte, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Rodri and Ederson.
Of the top 10 in that metric, only one man never appeared for City in the Premier League.
However, in our 44 games without Dias in the Premier League since he moved to Manchester, our win percentage drops to 59.1%.
We have also only conceded 112 goals in Dias’ 145 Premier League games, meaning it’s an average of 0.8 per match.
That rises to 1.2 per match when Dias isn’t involved, with 51 goals conceded in the 44 games.
All the numbers point to Dias’ incredible influence on this City side and fans the world over will be thrilled to see him sign again on the dotted line.
