Diego Costa has sided with José Mourinho over Antonio Conte, praising the Benfica manager and sharply criticising the Italian.
Speaking on John Obi Mikel’s podcast, the 37-year-old former Chelsea striker said Conte does not trust anyone and thinks he knows everything. He said players did not enjoy training because he was always angry and stone-faced, adding that nobody liked him so he did not last long. Mikel also spent several years working with Mourinho at Chelsea.
By contrast, Costa said Mourinho was the coach he enjoyed working with most because he “gives you life” and made training joyful. With the “Special One”, he won the 2014/2015 Premier League and the League Cup in the same period.
The two coaches have already met this season, Mourinho prevailed as Benfica beat Napoli 2-0 on 10 December in the Champions League group stage. The match was noted for a standout display from Richard Ríos.
Mourinho will face Real Madrid, the club he managed from 2010 to 2013, on 28 January at 20:00 at Estádio da Luz. The fixture will close the UEFA Champions League league phase.
