Liverpool’s Champions League campaign began in typically dramatic fashion at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk rising highest in stoppage time to secure a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid. The captain’s towering header not only delivered three points but also underlined his influence under new manager Arne Slot.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was quick to recognise the Dutchman’s decisive role. Speaking afterwards, he said:
“We managed to equalise, and after that equaliser, in the last few minutes, the team began to be pushed further and further back, and your legs start to suffer.
“There was a corner, and after the corner, they scored a massive header. It was a great, great goal from Virgil van Dijk. We got a great opponent. Congratulations to them.”
Simeone’s words echoed the emotions of a contest that had slipped from his side’s grasp. Marcos Llorente had levelled for Atletico after goals from Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, yet the visitors could not withstand the late pressure that has become a hallmark of Anfield nights.

Statistics painted the picture of a defender in complete control. Van Dijk won six of his seven aerial duels, completed 97 per cent of his passes, and had 105 touches of the ball. He was never dribbled past, showing why Slot continues to build his defensive unit around him.
Equally important was his distribution. He completed three of four long passes, stretching Atletico Madrid at key moments and reinforcing his status as more than a purely defensive figure. It was the type of rounded performance that adds to the argument, made recently by Jamie Carragher, that Van Dijk belongs among Liverpool’s greatest players.
For Simeone, Anfield once again proved a testing arena. His team showed resilience to fight back, yet as he admitted, fatigue crept in during the closing stages. Against a side that thrives on momentum, Atletico Madrid found themselves retreating deeper and deeper.
Liverpool capitalised, with Robertson and Salah on target before Van Dijk provided the decisive blow. It was a display that captured Slot’s approach, blending defensive organisation with relentless attacking pressure.
Simeone’s admiration for Van Dijk was not confined to his post-match analysis. Before kick-off, he had already praised the centre-back, remarking that Liverpool “have a wonderful centre-back who can knock the ball around”. The Argentine’s prediction proved accurate, as the Dutchman’s calm authority and decisive intervention shaped the outcome.
Liverpool’s victory not only sets the tone for their European campaign but also strengthens belief in Slot’s leadership after last season’s Premier League triumph. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, will need to regroup, knowing that even a momentary lapse can be punished at this level.
For Van Dijk, the night confirmed what many at Anfield already know. He remains a defender capable of shaping results, a leader whose influence stretches beyond the penalty area, and a figure still central to Liverpool’s ambitions under their new era.
