Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has on Monday provided his take on the weekend controversy surrounding arch rivals Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Real of course took their place centre stage in the headlines across Spain late on Saturday night.
This came after the reigning La Liga champions were condemned to a drama-filled defeat at the hands of Espanyol.
After Carlos Romero somehow managed to escape a red card for a dangerous challenge on Kylian Mbappé, the 23-year-old went on to net the game’s only goal late on.
As much left all associated with Real Madrid understandably frustrated, amid the consensus that Los Blancos were extremely hard done by on the part of the team of officials at the RCDE Stadium.
With his side now just a point adrift of Real atop the La Liga table, the subject of the weekend’s Romero-Mbappé drama was in turn put to the aforementioned Diego Simeone on Monday.
And Atlético’s headmaster went on to respond:
“Referees have historically always been in the spotlight. It’s very difficult to make the decisions they have to make at such speed. Now they have VAR to make it better.”
