Yan Diomande inspired RB Leipzig to come from behind and claim a 2-1 victory over FC Augsburg at the Red Bull Arena in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The home side started on the front foot, but it was the visitors who had the first clear-cut chance in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Christoph Baumgartner was adjudged to have handled the ball.
In the absence of Alexis Claude-Maurice, who was missing for personal reasons, Keven Schlotterbeck stepped up to take the spot kick. However, he was unable to convert, with Maarten Vandevoordt producing a fine save to deny him.
At the other end, Finn Dahmen was called into action around the half-hour mark, making an excellent reflex stop after Yan Diomande ended a mazy run with a powerful strike on goal.
Ultimately, Augsburg went into the break with the lead thanks to Robin Fellhauer’s 39th-minute strike. The 28-year-old found the net from a central position after being picked out by a clever pass from Fabian Rieder.
Leipzig came close to an equaliser early in the second half when Christoph Baumgartner was presented with a close-range opportunity following a scramble in the box, but Dahmen reacted well to tip his effort over the crossbar.
Moments later, Augsburg almost doubled their advantage at the other end, with Vandevoordt doing well to deny first Dimitrios Giannoulis and then Anton Kade.
Enjoying an excellent afternoon in the Augsburg goal, Dahmen continued to produce important saves and kept out Romulo’s effort in the 72nd minute.
Leipzig eventually found the equaliser four minutes later, though, as Yan Diomande skipped away from Keven Schlotterbeck before slotting the ball into the net.
Augsburg came close to reclaiming the lead when Rodrigo Ribeiro’s effort struck the post before Conrad Harder was denied by a fine save at the other end.
The scoreline remained even until injury time, when David Raum delivered a low cross that Dahmen deflected onto Augsburg teammate Arthur Chaves, who inadvertently turned it into his own net, handing Leipzig a 2–1 victory.
