The disciplinary case into an alleged spit by Alberto Costa on Sorriso during FC Porto’s league match with Famalicão has been closed. According to O Jogo, Sporting had lodged the complaint with the FPF Disciplinary Council.

The flashpoint came on 86 minutes after a foul against the Porto full-back on the Brazilian forward, who held onto the ball and tensions rose. At that point it was 1-1, and the game later finished 2-2.

Costa has consistently denied spitting, saying the confrontation went no further than contesting the ball and a sharper exchange of words. Online images appeared to suggest otherwise and the clip spread quickly.

Surprised by Sorriso’s remarks, the Porto defender set out his position in a social media post at the time.

In the heat of the exchange, speaking forcefully could have produced minor saliva droplets.
