Borussia Dortmund delivered their best performance of the season so far in the Bundesliga as they cruised to a 4-0 win over SC Freiburg.
Desperately needing a bounce back win at home, Borussia Dortmund issued a statement of their quality on Saturday afternoon by comfortably dispatching SC Freiburg 4-0. Goals from Maximilian Beier, Felix Nmecha, Julian Brandt, and Jamie Gittens gave the Black and Yellows the three points as they moved up to fifth place in the Bundesliga standings.
Nuri Sahin's side also maintainted their perfect record at home as they delivered a performance of the highest quality. To add to Freiburg's misery, the away side had two players sent off in the second-half. Former BVB youngster Patrick Osterhage was sent off for two yellow cards at the hour mark, before Junior Adamu was shown a straight red late in the game.
The win will come as a source of relief and a huge momentum builder for Borussia Dortmund as they look to turn things around in the Bundesliga.
Sahin had spoken about wanting to see Borussia Dortmund dominate matches in the build-up to the game. And it did not take his side long to do exactly that against Freiburg. Maximilian Beier opened the scoring in the seventh minute at the end of an excellent team move after being played through by Ramy Bensebaini.
The rest of the first-half was a somewhat tight affair, with Freiburg looking dangerous at times. But Felix Nmecha made sure that Borussia Dortmund went into the break with a two-goal lead as he let fly from outside the box and found the bottom corner with a thumping drive.
The second goal took the sting out of Freiburg, and Osterhage's red card ended any hope they had of pulling off a comeback. And Julian Brandt then added to Freiburg's misery by scoring Borussia Dortmund's third goal with a beautifully taken free-kick.
Jamie Gittens then scored the fourth goal in the 77th minute after some good work on the left to seal the dominant win for Borussia Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund delivered a complete performance against Freiburg, showing glimpses of the quality and potential that is there in the team. Now, they must figure out a way to do it on a consistent basis. Next up for BVB is a trip to Dinamo Zagreb before Bayern Munich travel to the Westfalenstadion for Der Klassiker.
