Alejandro Domínguez has said the door is open for MLS and Liga MX clubs to return to the Copa Libertadores, with Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, central to the conversation. His remarks followed recent comments from Jorge Más, a co-owner of the Florida franchise.
"Remember that they were here with us playing until 2016, but if they want to return, they have to do it through CONCACAF," said Domínguez. He was speaking to GeGlobo.
"It is a matter that must be discussed within CONCACAF. It has been done before and we are very respectful of the other confederations."
"It is an honour that teams from other confederations view the Libertadores as a reference for international and global competition."
MLS sides have previously featured in CONMEBOL tournaments, including the now defunct Copa Merconorte and the Copa Sudamericana. DC United took part in 2005 and 2007, reaching the last 16 in 2005 after an invitation as MLS champions.
Founded in 2018, Inter Miami have become prominent in MLS and, with Messi as their figurehead, have already won the domestic league, the Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield.
