The long-serving league boss – who has held the role since 2009 – was speaking at Hampden after the publication of a new economic report which revealed Scottish football contributes around £820million annually to the national economy. The figures were compiled through a commissioned study by the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde.

Neil Doncaster highlighted the tight nature of the title battle, with only a narrow gap separating Hearts, Celtic and the latest Ibrox club.

Doncaster believes the congested league table have added to the spectacle in the top flight, praising the quality and unpredictability of the campaign and hoping the destination of the trophy will not be settled until the final round of fixtures.

Speaking via Sky Sports, the SPFL chief executive  said: “It’s exciting, we’ve waited a very long time for this, and it is fantastic to see it. All of it helps in terms of driving interest in our game, driving attendances, and economically as well.”

“We’re very pleased with both the way the league is shaping up, but also the results of today’s[survey]findings.”

Doncaster added: “It is a bit different, and we’re delighted to see the coverage on Sky Sports this year, and to see so many games in front of full stadia, with something meaningful to play for – perhaps a three or four-way title race! It is fantastic to see.”

“We haven’t had too many final day deciders in my time up here. So, perhaps a final-day decider in front of the Sky Sports cameras would be good to look forward to – I suspect I would be sat in a helicopter!”

In order for Celtic to get to the last day, they must not lose on Sunday at Tynecastle. Before that, a massive game awaits in Bologna on Thursday night.
