Corinthians have sacked Dorival Júnior after a 1-0 defeat to Internacional, with football executive Marcelo Paz delivering a statement on Sunday night to explain the decision. According to Globo.com, he set out the reasons for ending the coach's tenure.

Paz thanked Dorival for the trophies won, but said the work had reached its ceiling and was no longer producing what was expected. He cited a nine-match winless run, declining performances, trouble creating and finishing chances as desired, and home defeats.

He added that players themselves had appeared anxious amid the issues under Dorival. Paz spoke at Neo Química Arena but did not take questions from reporters.

He described talks with the coach as positive, saying Dorival accepted that this was not the right moment to continue, while lamenting the end of his spell.

Corinthians will now begin the search for a new head coach. There is no favourite at this stage, though options on the market include Tite and Fernando Diniz.
