Fifty-four-year-old Terry Dunn’s usual Saturday lie-in and afternoon trip to watch his cherished Dorking Wanderers has been postponed this week.

Instead of supporting the National League South side from behind the goal against AFC Totton, he has responded to the Surrey club’s urgent request and will don his well-worn goalkeeper gloves once more, returning to the pitch after 28 years in retirement.

Dunn, whose previous clubs include the now-defunct North Holmwood and who enjoyed multiple promotions with several local sides before retiring in 1997, will join the playing squad on a short-term basis — until Monday, when Dorking can recruit a new keeper to address their injury predicament.

Upon signing for the Wanderers, Dunn said: “Playing in goal is like riding a bike – you never forget it. I still regularly play walking football. As a Wanderers fan, no one will be trying harder than me to keep a clean sheet on Saturday.”

The club chair and first-team manager, Marc White, added: “In an era where passion comes in low quantities, what Terry lacks in mobility, he’ll make up for in heart – and for one game, we’re just going to have to get on with it.”

Supporters can expect the club to announce a new loan goalkeeper next week, reportedly on a four-week contract.
