It's no secret that Borussia Dortmund are keen to tie key defender Nico Schlotterbeck down to a contract beyond 2027.
Speaking on Wednesday, BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl said he remains “very optimistic” about extending the deal for the centre-back, who recently returned from a long-term injury.
“We’ve been in talks for some time. I can promise that we are working on it. It will still take a few days,” Kehl told Sky.
For Schlotterbeck, it’s currently about “finding himself, getting back into rhythm and pursuing big goals – hopefully with BVB,” he added.
Managing director for sport Lars Ricken also commented on the defender and his future in an interview with DAZN.
“He’s an absolute figure of identification for our fans. We don’t even need to talk about his sporting performances. He identifies 100 percent with this club. Right now, he is focusing on recovery,” Ricken said.
“He has by no means said that it will definitely not happen. Now he’s fit again and playing, and such discussions don’t happen within a few hours. We have extreme trust with each other, but neither I nor any other staff member will announce updates prematurely,” he added.
