Borussia Dortmund defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at the BayArena to move closer to second-place RB Leipzig.
The match started balanced and fiercely contested, with the first opportunity arising for the home team. Ernest Poku was given space on the left, where he took a defender out of the equation but shot powerfully over the goal. Leverkusen were on top, and later, Edmond Tapsoba latched on to a cross from Alex Grimaldo but couldn't hit the target.
The visitors only managed to create danger at the 41st minute, opening the score with their first shot. Daniel Svensson took the free kick into the box and Aaron Anselmino burst in to head the ball into the net. Poku sought an equaliser before the break, but Gregor Kobel saved the mid-range shot.
In the second half, the team led by Kasper Hjulmand continued to search for a goal but Dortmund threatened again from a set piece, with Serhou Guirassy's header being saved by Mark Flekken – a great intervention by the former Brentford goalkeeper.
In a moment of great uncertainty, Niko Kovac introduced Fábio Silva, and the Portuguese quickly made an impact. The striker delivered a pinpoint cross for a precise header from Karim Adeyemi to make it 2-0 in the 65th minute.
In an attempt to respond, Jonas Hofmann and Poku both hit the bar, before Christian Kofane narrowed the score with a subtle, yet well-placed touch. However, it was not enough for the home side.
With this victory, Dortmund moved up to third place, overtaking Leverkusen and moving close to second-place RB Leipzig.
