Manchester United’s protracted pursuit of Ederson has been thrown into serious doubt, with conflicting reports over whether the deal is dead.

Sky Sport Italia and Fabrizio Romano both report that talks have broken down, though United sources insist the move remains possible.

The Brazilian had appeared bound for Old Trafford. Sky Sports News reported in June that United had agreed a package worth £34m plus £3.8m in bonuses, with all documents completed.

Ederson himself sounded confident after Brazil’s group-stage win over Haiti, saying: “Certainly, everything is almost done.”

The medical process, however, complicated matters. United requested additional, more intensive tests once Brazil were eliminated, reportedly harbouring concerns over his recent injury history. Those checks were completed in recent days.

What followed was a dramatic development. Romano reported that United had informed Atalanta they were withdrawing, having “changed their plans.” Ederson is now expected to report back to Maurizio Sarri’s squad in Bergamo.

Atalanta, though, firmly reject the fitness narrative. The Serie A club maintain Ederson is 100% fit, noting he was part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, and believe United simply had a change of heart. They are said to be preparing a contract extension to keep him.

United have not accepted the deal is finished. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that club sources deny the transfer is completely off, insisting a deal remains possible even if the process has grown difficult.

The uncertainty comes amid a busy midfield rebuild. United have agreed a £48m deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, with Wolves’ Joao Gomes now also linked should the Ederson move fail.

Ederson’s contract at Atalanta runs until 2027, leaving his long-term future unresolved as the window continues.
