Southampton’s revival under Tonda Eckert continued with a 1-0 FA Cup win at Fulham, and the manager hailed the travelling support.
According to Sainstmarching.com, Ross Stewart converted a late penalty at Craven Cottage, sparking wild celebrations in an away end that housed 5000 Southampton fans, with a quarter-final now on the horizon.
Eckert called the upset “special”. He said: “When you get off the coach and you come into the stadium, the whole end behind the goal is full of Southampton supporters. You just feel that this game was something special for us today, and I think we managed to do this quite well over the 90 minutes.”
The club’s supporters have endured a bruising spell, from relegation to a run of two wins in 13 league games under Will Still. Since taking charge, Eckert has steadied the mood and put Southampton back in the play-off mix, winning 15 of his 25 matches.
Their away league form has surged too, with three straight victories and nine goals on the road rewarding those long journeys. Eckert wants the bond with fans to grow as Southampton chase a late push into the play-off places.
Tests lie ahead, but with a loud backing an immediate return to the Premier League might yet be within reach. Fulham versus Southampton could even be a league fixture this time next year.
