Ecuador international Mario Pineida shot dead in Guayaquil

Ecuador international Mario Pineida, aged 33, has been shot dead in Guayaquil. The club said in a statement that the Barcelona SC defender died on Wednesday.

Pineida won eight caps for Ecuador and featured in qualifying for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

He was an Ecuadorian champion in 2016 with Barcelona SC and also played for Brazilian side Fluminense.

Ecuador, long seen as a haven in Latin America, has in recent years faced a sharp rise in violence as rival gangs linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control of drug routes.

The port city of Guayaquil, a key exit point for cocaine produced in neighbouring Colombia and Peru, has been particularly affected by this struggle between criminal organisations.
