Eddie Howe says that Alexander Isak must be “totally committed” to the Newcastle United cause if he is make a return to the first team.

The striker has not played for the Magpies since telling the club he wishes to depart St James’ Park and join Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

Earlier this week Isak stated that “the relationship can’t continue”, claiming that the club broke their promise to let him leave.

Newcastle refuted his assertion, stating that no such commitment has “ever been made” and “the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired”.

Speaking ahead of Monday night’s clash with Liverpool, Howe said that he has spoken with Isak to try and resolve the situation, although he hasn’t seen him in “five or six days”.

Despite the Sweden international’s decision to air his grievances in public, Howe praised the player’s character and professionalism, but regrets that the saga has broken containment.

The Newcastle boss still believes there is a way back for Isak and wants to see him playing for the club again, but he must “give his all” in order for that to happen.

“If Alex is to play for Newcastle again he has to be totally committed and I don’t think it works any other way,” Howe said. “That question is for another day but any player that puts on the shirt and steps out onto the pitch has to give his all for the team.

“My reaction [to his statement] was disappointment in that these things are being made public. For me all of these things should be face-to-face between club and player. It doesn’t reflect well on the club or Alex and I think from the clubs perspective they felt they had to reply but for me it was a sad moment.”

The Newcastle supporters are unsurprisingly furious at Isak and could be heard chanting “one greedy b******” following their scoreless draw with Aston Villa last weekend. Asked if the 25-year-old can repair his relationship with the fans, Howe responded:”I believe he can.

“I believe the supporters will always react on how a player plays and what he gives to the team. There are always two sides to every story.

“There is always more than even I will now as there are conversations that have taken place away from my understanding of it and I’ve been away on pre-season and have become detached from the situation.

“My job now is to support Alex, care for him and see where we are in a week’s time.”

Howe added: This situation is regrettable. Not something we wanted or Alex wanted. I’m talking about his conduct every day, his professionalism, he is very committed, very driven, and very professional. Others can make their own opinion, but I’m giving you background about the player I know everyday.”
