Eddie Howe has been urged to consider resigning after Newcastle’s heavy Champions League loss to Barcelona. According to Sunderland Echo, talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham made the call following the defeat.

Newcastle were beaten 7-2 at Camp Nou, exiting 8-3 on aggregate in their heaviest European knockout defeat. Competitive before the interval, they unravelled after half-time as defensive mistakes mounted.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Durham labelled the second half a capitulation and argued the manager should at least offer his resignation after such a hammering. In the studio, Dean Ashton questioned the timing given the weekend fixture.

“A tough way to go out. Really strange to try and sum that up because first half, I thought we were excellent. Quite a lot of individual errors that have ultimately cost us. In the second half, we were nowhere near as good as the first. They deserved to go through,” he told TNT Sports.

“Yeah, I’ve got no problems picking myself up. Now it’s all about Sunderland. It’s about the next game and making sure we’re mentally ready, physically ready for what’s going to be a huge game for us and for the whole city.”

Newcastle seek a response after losing 1-0 in December’s reverse fixture. “We’ve got to play like our lives depend on it.”
