Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Ederson after sources revealed the breakdown of the expected £38 million agreement with Atalanta, as per a new report.

With a third-placed finish in the Premier League table in the bag, the Red Devils are wasting no time in beginning their midfield rebuild this summer. Michael Carrick has delivered on his brief of securing Champions League qualification, which has, in turn, earned him the permanent head coach role at Old Trafford.

The club’s first point of order is to bolster his stalling engine room, with Casemiro‘s time in M16 at an end and Manuel Ugarte facing a similar fate.

Ederson, the 26-year-old Brazilian enforcer who has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A, has rapidly emerged as a priority target.

United executives have flown to Bergamo this week to hold talks with Atalanta, a club with whom they enjoy a strong working relationship.

Reports from Italy prematurely claimed a £46m agreement had already been struck, which would have proven an expensive outlay for a player with just one year remaining on his contract.

Talks enter the final stage

However, Lyall Thomas (Sky Sports) now reveals United are “close to agreeing” a deal worth in the region of £38m (€44m), with personal terms understood to already have been signed off.

The transfer expert claims well-placed sources indicate it will be broken down into a £35m fee up front, with another £3m in add-ons. The expectation is for a “full agreement” to be reached in the coming days.

While Ederson is not the ‘flashiest’ name on United’s wish list, he is a versatile operator with outstanding physicality and experience at the highest levels of club football.

If a price around the £38m mark enables the capture of additional big-money signings in midfield, with Ugarte being sold to make room for them, this will represent the exact overhaul needed in the middle of the pitch at Old Trafford.
