Édouard Mendy will miss Senegal’s third and final World Cup group game against Iraq on Friday at 21:00 in Toronto. According to L'Équipe, the goalkeeper has suffered a left knee ligament injury.

He was hurt during the 3-2 defeat to Norway and is already ruled out of this decisive fixture. Further examinations will determine the exact nature of the damage and any return date, and he may be sidelined for longer. It is a worrying development for a player contesting his final tournament with the Lions.

Senegal arrived with ambition but have lost twice, making for a nightmare start to the tournament.

After the Norway reverse, Kalidou Koulibaly underlined Mendy’s influence, saying the sight of him injured affected the players mentally and expressing hope it is not too serious. He noted that Mendy was on his feet from the bench, offering instructions.

Mory Diaw of Le Havre will replace him. The club will have both its first-choice keepers at this World Cup, with Diaw for Senegal and Lionel Mpasi with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
